About Word Search

Word Search is one of the most universally beloved word puzzles in the world — a staple of newspapers, puzzle books, waiting rooms, and educational classrooms for over 50 years. A grid of letters conceals a list of hidden words, arranged horizontally, vertically, or diagonally (and sometimes backwards). Your job: find every word before the timer runs out, circling each discovery with a satisfying drag. The Word Search puzzle was invented in 1968 and immediately became a mass-market success. Unlike crosswords that demand vocabulary knowledge, Word Search is accessible to anyone who can recognize letter patterns. Yet there's genuine skill involved: experienced solvers develop pattern-recognition abilities that let them spot words almost automatically, scanning grid sections in seconds rather than letter-by-letter. Our version features themed word sets — from programming languages and ocean life to animals, foods, sports, and space. Each puzzle uses a 10×10 grid with 7 hidden words, a difficulty level that's challenging without being overwhelming. Words can run in any of eight directions (including diagonals and backwards), and the grid is filled with random letters to obscure the targets. The drag-to-select interface makes finding words satisfying and intuitive. Click (or tap) the first letter of a word, drag to the last letter, and the word highlights and locks in if correct. Incorrect selections simply deselect, letting you try again. Correct finds are crossed off the word list, giving you clear progress feedback throughout the puzzle. A timer tracks your solve time, making each puzzle a speed challenge. Can you find all seven words in under 2 minutes? Under 90 seconds? Word Search is also a surprisingly effective vocabulary and focus exercise — the sustained attention required to scan letter grids is good mental practice. **Tips:** Start by looking for the shortest words — they're easiest to spot. Scan each row and column methodically rather than randomly. Look for unusual letter combinations (double letters, Q, X, Z) that stand out from the filler letters. Diagonal words are hardest to spot — check those last.
