Checkers (also known as Draughts in the UK) is a classic two-player strategy board game played on an 8×8 grid, with each player controlling 12 pieces that move diagonally. It's one of the world's most studied strategy games — in 2007, a team of computer scientists at the University of Alberta spent 18 years of computing time to "solve" Checkers, proving that perfect play from both sides always results in a draw. Despite being theoretically solved, Checkers remains a deeply engaging tactical challenge for human players. The rules are straightforward: your pieces (red) move diagonally forward on dark squares. Capture an opponent's piece by jumping over it to an empty square beyond. If a jump is available, it must be taken — you cannot decline a capture. Chain multiple jumps together in a single turn to clear multiple enemy pieces. When a piece reaches the far end of the board, it becomes a King, gaining the ability to move diagonally in any direction — backward or forward — making Kings dramatically more powerful than regular pieces. Strategy in Checkers centers on position and tempo. Controlling the center of the board gives your pieces more mobility and forces your opponent to play defensively. Trading pieces is only advantageous if the resulting position favors you — experienced players avoid captures that give the opponent positional advantage even when winning a piece in the exchange. King promotion is powerful but overcommitting to a king run can leave your back rank weak.
